FAQ Passwortänderung

What is the MLU password?

The MLU password is your central password for the single sign-on (SSO) of Martin Luther University. You use it to sign in to the university's central services

How do I reset or change my MLU password?

Go to the ITZ Service Portal:

  1. Enter your university e-mail address.
  2. You will receive a temporary access code by e-mail.
  3. Use this code to change your password in the protected area of the website

I received a link like `secrets.itz.uni-halle.de/s/…` What is it?

The link delivers a password or access code to you securely, instead of sending it in plain text by e-mail.

  • The link can be opened only once. After you open it, the content is shown and is no longer available. Copy it right away, ideally into a password manager.
  • The link is valid for a limited time
  • Do not share the link and do not open it "just to test".
  • If the page says the link is invalid or already used, someone else may have opened it. Contact the service desk immediately so that a new link and, if necessary, a new password can be issued .
  • If you received a password through such a link, change it in the Service Portal afterwards.

Does my new MLU password apply to all services automatically?

No, not to all of them. Most central services use the MLU password from the central directory (AD). Some services, however, still use a separate, decentralized password that does not change automatically and must be updated separately. This commonly affects:

  • Löwenportal
  • faculty-specific services

After changing your password, check whether you can still sign in to these services with your old password, and change it there as well if needed.

Why is my account locked?

To protect against brute-force attacks, the central directory (AD) locks an account for 20 minutes after 6 failed login attempts.

  • This should not normally happen during a password change, but it is possible.
  • Please wait the full 20 minutes.
  • Afterwards, make sure your new password is entered everywhere (see below).

Why am I locked out even though I didn't mistype anything?

Usually, devices or programs in the background are still signing in with your old saved password, for example:

  • smartphone or tablet (mail, calendar, contacts)
  • mail clients (e.g. Thunderbird, Outlook)
  • cloud sync clients
  • other devices, laptops and saved browser passwords

Each of these attempts counts as a failed login. Please update your password on all devices promptly.

There is also a per-service lockout, right?

Yes. In addition to the central protection, individual services have their own brute-force protection, for example e-mail and cloud, and possibly others. Their ban time may be shorter than the central 20 minutes. A service may therefore lock you out while sign-in works elsewhere, or the other way round. In that case, wait a short while and try again with the correct password.

Checklist before changing your password

If your old MLU password is still stored on another device or in other programs or services, disable synchronization or, alternatively, put the device into airplane mode.

Please pay particular attention to:

  • Wi-Fi connections ("uni-halle") on smartphones, tablets, or laptops
  • Synchronization programs on computers, laptops, tablets, or smartphones, e.g., for MLUcloud (calendars, files)
  • Email applications on PCs, laptops, smartphones, or tablets, such as Thunderbird or Apple Mail

Important:

After changing your MLU password, make sure to update all stored passwords immediately, before re-enabling synchronization or turning off airplane mode. This is the only way to ensure that you can continue using the services as usual.

Checklist after changing your MLU password

  1. New MLU password set in the Service Portal.
  2. Password updated on all devices (smartphone, tablet, laptop, mail clients).
  3. Calendar, e-mail and cloud checked, and password changed there separately if needed.
  4. If locked out: wait 20 minutes, then sign in again.
  5. Still having problems? Contact the service desk .
